Watermelon contains 90 percent water and therefore it is a typical summer fruit which helps people to keep the body refreshed and hydrated. The plant of this fruit is a vine-like herb and the characteristic traits are a dark green thick skin and a rich red flesh in the inside. They are the apt choice while a person is dieting because apart from water, this fruit contains vitamin A and C, and other nutritive minerals like iron, zinc, potassium, etc. Big juicy watermelons can be grown by selecting the best varieties of seeds and by properly planting, tending, feeding and watering the plants. Watermelons can be grown even in small spaces if the gardener chooses to do so. In tiny gardens, the sight of big watermelons lying ripe in a light yellow color is truly a sight to behold. Watermelons find loamy, fertile, well-drained soil ideal for its growth. The soil should be tilled thoroughly by breaking up all large clumps of packed earth. The soil should be tilled in such a way that they are loose enough for the roots to grow, should be able to allow oxygen, and should also be able to allow excess moisture to drain away from them. In small garden areas, the planters use a black plastic sheet to warm the soil and to accelerate seed germination. The use of the black sheet also helps to prevent weed growth as they are the culprits that rob the plants of their precious moisture. The seeds are planted in small mounds or hills about four feet apart. About two to three seeds are sowed in a single hill and the soil is mounded firmly. In the initial stages, the plant should be given immense care by taking care that there is no stress to the root system or the leaves and stems of the plant. Feeding the plants with the necessary fertilizers and watering the plants is essential for ensuring optimum watermelon growth. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium included fertilizers are provided for the plants and since they are heavy feeders watering also should be consistent. Until the plant matures, watering should be done at the base of the plant for at least 1 hour daily. When the vines are matured they should be trained to run the length of the garden or wander in a horizontal path in opposite directions. It takes only about 80 to 90 days for a watermelon of bush variety to reach its optimum growth and mature. When the fruit is ripe, the dark green surface dulls and a yellow color creeps in. Testing the rind by pressing it with the tip of a thumbnail, helps to assure if the fruit is ripe and ready to eat.
