Training to become a teacher in the state of Texas is something that many students are thinking of doing despite the massive drop in teacher applications over the past few years. In order to become a fully qualified teacher in the state of Texas, there are a number of steps that you have to go through, and in this article I want to lay those out for you. Step 1 - Obtain a Bachelor's Degree To be qualified to teacher most subjects, you need to have at least a bachelor's degree in any subject. Currently there aren't any schools/colleges in the State of Texas that allow you to study education at degree level, but that's OK, because you are allowed to major in any subject. The exception to this rule is that there are certain subjects where you don't have to have completed a bachelor's degree. Two examples include careers and technology. If you are planning on teaching those subjects then a degree isn't necessary, but for most other subjects it is a prerequisite. Step 2 - Complete an Approved Teacher Education Program The next step is to complete an approved teacher education program. These programs consist of both coursework and fieldwork and teach you about the science of pedagogy, how to research material to plan lessons, how to create lesson plans and structure lessons etc. It doesn't take long to complete this course - most courses are around 14 weeks long and can be completed on a part time basis should you have other commitments. Those who are at college/university will usually have the option to take this approved teacher education program as part of their degree program, even if not majoring in Education. Modules can be taken during the course so that when the student graduates, he/she simply needs to complete step 3 of this process (pass the examinations) and no further training is required. If a student has already graduated and hasn't taken one of these modules during the course, then he/she will have to go through an alternative certification process. These courses can be taken through schools/colleges on a part time basis and usually you are expected to pay a small lump sum up front with the remainder of the fee due once you begin teaching. The total cost of these alternative courses is usually around $4,000 although it does vary quite a bit. Step 3 - Pass the THEA and TExES examination The final stage, once steps 1 and 2 are complete, is to pass the written examinations. Once a student has passed the examionations then he/she is eligible to teach and can look for a job in a school. The THEA is a general skills based test that is the same for everyone regardless of the subject being taught. It is about basic skills, professionalism and the science of pedagogy. The TExES is subject specific and is designed to test you knowledge of the subject that you are going to be teaching. Obviously, these exams vary wildly depending on your subject area. Once you have completed everything on this list, you are fully qualified as a teacher in the State of Texas. You'll also find that a number of other states will allow you to be a teacher through reciprocity agreements - if you are looking to teach in another state and use your Texas qualification then I advise that you get in touch with the education board for the respect state.
