Tips to Prevent Overeating On Weekends

Our weekend is often filled with social activities, free time and lots of great food. The weekends are less structured than the weekdays which can result in excessive eating and less physical activity. Even the most dedicated can often fall off the wagon and it may be difficult to maintain our eating habits on the weekends. Yes, you should let loose on the weekends and have a great time, but it doesn't mean you should overeat and be lethargic. Here are some tips to making sure you stick to a healthy eating plan: 1. Wake up early. Sleeping in is a treat but it can also ruin your eating habits and wreck havoc on the timing of your meals, resulting in larger portion sizes. 2. Exercise early. Don't wake up spending hours and hours on the couch. Start your day with a bit of exercise to balance out any extra calories you may take in to manage your weight. 3. Limit booze. Alcohol contains empty calories and may weaken your resolve to make healthy food choices. Stick to water, teas and pure juice whenever possible. Remember that the average beer contains 120 calories that goes straight to your waist line. 4. Eat less at parties. It's easy to overeat when we're at a dinner party so stick to small portions of food on a small plate to prevent binge eating. 5. Don't skip breakfast. It's easy to skip breakfast in favor of a large brunch so make sure to eat a healthy breakfast as soon as you get up to keep you satisfied for a few hours. 6. Weigh yourself on Monday. We normally don't advocate using scales but weighing yourself the day after a weekend of gluttony can be enough to scare you into being more diligent with your diet. 7. Stay physical. Be active on the weekends and plan ahead. Keep your mind off of food by staying busy to prevent overeating. Go for a bike ride, run errands, socialize, and move around! 8. Treat yourself. You've had a hard, long week and you deserve a treat. For many people, a treat means food. Find other ways to treat yourself like catching a movie, going to a spa, meeting with old friends, or going shopping. Stop and assess how you were last weekend and what you can do to improve the weekend ahead. Remember that if you do have a weekend episode of overeating, get back on track the next weekend and plan ahead.
