Teen Summer Camps Inspire a Student to Pursue Marine Biology Programs Sail Caribbean has been offering adventures to teens and college age students since 1979. No prior experience is required. At all of Sail Caribbean's teen summer camps there is a special focus and enthusiasm for empowering teens and encouraging them to try new adventures. Often these experiences make a lasting impression. One particular student who attended the camp for three consecutive years found inspirations that helped lead him to great accomplishments. In 2002, Josh Stewart was 13 years old when he first joined Sail Caribbean's Bravo program in the British Virgin Islands. He had never been sailing before, but quickly learned the ropes. He explored the islands with his crew and took on the responsibilities of running their 50ft yacht. Marine biology programs and seminars are one aspect of Sail Caribbean's teen summer camps. There Josh participated in his first marine conservation work - a mangrove rehabilitation project. Josh chose to return to the camp for two more consecutive years and joined Sail Caribbean's Delta program in the Leeward Islands in 2003 and 2004. That was his opportunity to begin exploring the Caribbean beneath the waves and do his very first scuba dive. Returning to these teen summer camps presented new adventures, challenges, role models and ideas. Sail Caribbean's underwater videographer was shooting footage that summer of 2004, and his work made an impression on Josh. Josh continued to pursue his new interests and they became his passion. He charted a personal course and found innovative ways to immerse himself in marine biology programs. Josh attended landlocked Indiana University, used the school's Individualized Major Program to design his Bachelor of Arts degree, and was awarded the school's first marine biology diploma. Afterward, a rigorous marine biology curriculum including research projects at James Cook University near Australia's Great Barrier Reef helped turn his passion toward marine conservation. These marine biology programs have led him on great adventures. Josh was recently named the 2010 North American Rolex Scholar by Our World - Underwater Scholarship Society. He is now traveling the world using his skills as a diver and videographer to promote marine education and conservation. Today he has logged nearly 500 scuba dives. Sail Caribbean is very proud of Josh for trying new things, finding his passions and pursuing them to terrific accomplishments. When asked what advice Josh would give to young people. He said, "what ever inspires them is what they should go after."
