In an ideal world, we might all get high pairs as beginning hands, however truthfully, that infrequently occurs. What players will see more often are lower pairs of cards. For newer players, two anything looks rather good, but be cautious, particularly if you are playing for real money, when talking about low pairs. Typically, there aren't any fixed rules that say what makes up a low pair. For my own reasons, I consider anything below a 6 to be a low pair. As you develop experience and learn your own type of play you'll be able to set your own standards with regard to what's a low pair and what's not. One of the most handy tips that I will share with new players is this : 90 % of the time ( and this is very so if you are holding a low pair of pre-flop cards ) you wish to see an inexpensive flop. What I say by this is you want to see the flop for the least of your cash invested as practicable. Put an alternative way, if you're holding 2 3's you want to see the flop but you do not want to put in a bundle ( by calling massive gambles or raising ) in order to see that flop. The key to remember is a low pair has potential for changing into a big hand if you pick up a set ( another card matching yours comes up, giving you three-of-a-kind ) or a quad ( two matching cards come up on the flop, giving you four-of-a-kind ) or a full-house, but the major word here is potential. Until you see the flop all you have is a lowly pair, and in a ten-handed game and even in a seven-handed game, that sometimes isn't worth a lot and the lower the cards, the less that they're worth. Take into account that 2 4's will beat that pair of 3's. Again, we come back to place play and why it's vital to always know where you are re the Button. If you're the 1st one to act ( meaning, you are first to either call the blind and play or fold ) you must exercise caution. If you are first to play ( or maybe the second, 3rd, or 4th ) all the others players behind you will have the choice to raise the bet, driving you to put much more cash in before seeing the flop. If you're playing with noisy betters, the price tag can skyrocket in almost no time. Now if you are sitting there ( pre-flop ) with 2 King's or two Ace's you might welcome that pushy gambling. But with a little pair in your hand, it can spell doom, very fast. It is worth repeating. The key to playing small pairs is to see the flop for as little cash as practicable. But what if you are holding a little pair and you are at the far end of the table line? Perhaps you are in the blinds ( either the big blind or the small blind ) or maybe you are on the Button itself. What do you do if that is the case? Well, it depends. If only one or two earlier players have called the blinds ( though not raised ) you may like to go on and call yourself to see the flop too. Nevertheless if one player has made a giant raise or if two other players have called and raised, then you go with your tummy, and usually, your belly should be saying, Fold. If you are in the blinds and can see the flop for a small additional amount, then go for it. If you hit your set, you'll be in a brilliant position to potentially win the hand. If you don't hit your set on the flop, it is time to think hard about folding your hand unless the other players check and you can check too. If you can see a free card, see one. It is important to realize that you have about a 12% likelihood of hitting your set on the flop. The possibility of getting that third card to fill your set lessen significantly after the flop. In truth the chance of seeing that 3rd card by the Brook are only about 9%. These statistics relate to all pairs and not only to little pairs. Try to see the flop as inexpensively as practicable. If you hit your set on the flop, then go for it! If you don't hit your set on the flop, consider folding before putting any cash into the pot. Terribly frequently, you'll be content that you probably did.
