Buying the perfect engagement ring can be problematic when you consider the options available - the shapes, sizes, qualities and colours of diamonds - but if you abide by a few simple guide the process is quite painless. The most important thing to decide when purchasing a diamond ring is how much you are spending. The budget is a deeply personal thing and only you can decide how much you want to spend (or how much she is worth.). A rule of thumb historically was that a man would spend one month's salary on his girlfriend's engagement ring. Some still stick to this but only you can decide how much to spend. Once you know your budget you need to think about the style of your ring. For example, diamond engagement rings typically use 1, 2 or 3 stones where eternity rings can have five stones or an entire band of equal-size stones with no beginning or end - denoting eternity. The advantage of diamond rings is that, mostly, you can get any style of ring to fit your budget simply by altering the size and quality stones. Most people who buy diamonds or diamond jewellery are aware that the most expensive stones are the pure white ones that sparkle the most and have few, if any, inclusions (visible specs of dust). On larger stones of a carat or more, inclusions are normally visible to the naked eye, but those in smaller stones usually require an eyeglass to see them. The most popular diamonds are brilliant cut stones between 10 and 25 points in size (between 0.10 and 1/4 of a carat) and most people don't know that except for comparing diamonds side by side, the novice viewer would find it very tough to tell a perfect diamond from a lower grade one. Though in terms of cost, a ring made with lower grade stones will cost a fraction of a similar ring with flawless stones. Diamond is the most durable natural substance in existence and as such diamonds retain their value as the stones will not damage, degrade or tarnish even over many years. You can use this property to your benefit. Jewellers know that a diamond that he (or another jeweller) sold 10 years earlier will have an equivalent value in today's market. As such he should offer you a good trade-in value for your diamond jewellery against a new piece. Some canny, and not particularly wealthy, diamond buyers upgrade their diamonds every couple of years and keep the same setting and simply exchange the existing diamond or diamonds for larger or better quality ones and pay the difference. Doing this over many years can build you a very impressive jewellery collection with large, high-quality diamonds. Of course the advice given earlier changes. As you get larger stones the flaws become more obvious. So as a rule: the larger the diamond, the better quality it has to have to retain its effect.
