In a clinical study conducted in Italy last year, researchers came to the conclusion that individuals who engaged in a low carbohydrate Mediterranean diet which contained less than 50 percent of calories from carbohydrates, in comparison to those that consumed a low fat diet, less than thirty percent of daily calories from fat, had a significantly lower chance of requiring medications to control their diabetes. At the end of the 4-year study, only 44% of the respondents on the low carb Mediterranean diet had to be put on anti-hyperglycemic medications, whereas 70% of those who followed the low fat diet required the diabetes drugs. Certainly, in almost every case, losing weight will be of assistance, nonetheless, a quick weight loss diet may be difficult for diabetics. I received the unfortunate news, that I was a type II diabetic, in July of 1989. I tried the American Diabetes Association diet. While following this diet, my blood glucose levels kept rising. I was put on oral anti-hyperglycemic medications that were constantly being adjusted. Control of my condition was elusive, nothing I was doing seemed to work well. Eventually, I tried the Atkins low carbohydrate diet. Within two weeks my blood glucose levels were normal and I started to taper off on my medications. A month after that, I stopped taking my diabetes medicines completely. In addition, I started to reduce my weight. The doctors were surprised at the results of my blood sugar tests, and advised me to continue with my current course of action. They were skeptical about the Atkins diet, but they couldn't ignore my results. A good thing about this diet is that it helped me lose weight as well, it wasn't rapid weight loss, but it was steady. The Mediterranean Diet is a healthful one, however, it contains too many types of simple carbohydrates for someone who is diabetic. At the time of my diagnosis, I was informed that all alcohol containing drinks would have adverse effects on my blood sugar levels. For me, this was an unfortunate fact, but I remembered it well. In 1997, Dr. Richard K. Bernstein introduce his book, Doctor. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. Many who have followed his program have great things to say about it, because it helped them to control their blood sugar and lose weight, without the use of medication. Both the Atkins Diet and Dr. Bernstein's diet can be located on the internet. All the information on the Atkins site is free of charge and it even allows you to chart your progress. Doctor. Bernstein's web site gives you a link for ordering a HbA1c test that you can perform yourself for about fifteen dollars. and it gives you results in just 5 minutes, without the need to mail a blood sample anywhere. You can consult with a physician, but in the end, the responsibility is your own. Investigate you choices, and then make a selection that will work best for you. It's your health!
