Onions are the easiest vegetable to grow. If Green Onions are planted, it takes about a month's time for them to come up. On the other hand, if Bulb Onions are planted, it will take a little more than three months time for them to mature. The best time to plant onions when the temperatures are cool that is about 55 to 70 degrees. Once the foliage and root develops and bulb starts to grow a higher temperature is needed. It is advised to plant onions in loose, well drained soil which has plenty of organic matter contained in it. Since Onions are against acidic soil, ensure that the soil's pH value is around 6.5 by testing the soil. Soil with nitrogen is more opt for Onions, so make sure that the soil in which the Onions to be grown, contains plenty of nitrogen. Do a soil test using a soil test kit to find out the acidity will be helpful to know the presence of nitrogen in the soil. Onions grows well in raised beds because that will provide them lot of loose soil. It is advised to make sure that the Onions get ten to twelve hours of sun everyday and are watered frequently. Another alternate method to grow Onions is from the seed. But this method will take considerable time. Sow the Onion seeds in moist soil as wet soil is not conducive for growth. Plant the seed very thinly into ? inch deep drills. When you are planting more than one row, ensure that each row is nine inches apart. Put a layer of soil over the Onion seed and water it. Now the germination should occur in approximately 21 days. Once the seedlings have begun to move forward through the soil, they can be thinned out to between 1 and 2 inches apart. Later couple of weeks these can be thinned out further to one plant to every 5-5 inches. Do not forget to clear away all the discarded thinning to keep the Onion flies away. Keeping a constant eye on the newly sprouting Onion shoots is important to monitor the coming of prying birds like pigeons and black birds which are often attracted to this vegetable. These birds will lift the juvenile crops directly out of the seed beds just of their mischievous fun. Lack of proper protection may end in loosing almost all the crop. It is very vital to keep weeds from growing in Onion patch. It is better to pull weeds while cultivation instead by hoe, since the roots of the Onions can be disturbed easily.
